Prince Thoric of Solatia lived the life expected from the eldest son of the King. He was educated by the greatest scholars in all the kingdom, taught the art of the sword by the most skilled knights around, and was arranged to marry the fairest princess of the neighboring kingdom. The one thing he lacked, however, was a sense of compassion. He wasn’t cruel but his heart never once filled with a sense of responsibility for the people he would one day serve as King.
While passing through a small village on the way to marry his betrothed, Thoric’s indifference to the plight of the poor and hungry townsfolk was not unnoticed. The local witch asked for nothing more than scraps from the meal he hardly touched, to share with the street children. Upon his refusal, she cast a curse on him to reflect his inner self for all to see. He turned into a half-dragon beast, with scales as hard as his heart. To lift it, she told him he must right a hundred wrongs in a hundred days or remain transformed forever, unable to live as a human prince ever again. Desperate to return to the life he knew, Thoric traveled the land as a mercenary in search of wrongs to right. Only the most loyal of his servants remained with him, to help him regain his humanity.
As the days wore on and his time ran out, he discovered Solatia was rife with corrupt governors and swindling merchants, clergymen who stole from their churches and apothecaries who watered down their tonics. As he confronted each wrongdoer and resolved the evil they’d done, he realized the curse on him was a blessing. The kingdom still had a King, who had more sons to inherit his crown, but it lacked an enforcer to protect the laws and the people. Prince Thoric knew he could be that enforcer. So, on the ninety-ninth day after his ninety-ninth good deed, he did nothing. He would keep the dragon form and attributes which had once been his punishment, to use as weapons to protect Solatia from any who would dare undermine its peace and prosperity.
